Tea Tree Oil: Benefits and Uses
Tea Tree Oil (also known as Melaluca Oil), comes from a small tree that is native to Australia. It has been used to treat coughs and colds for centuries. And at this time of year when it seems everybody and their brother is getting sick, it’s good to have Tea Tree Oil in your home apothecary.
What’s so great about Tea Tree Oil?
- It is shown to kill certain bacteria, viruses and fungi. And in case you didn’t know, both cold and flu are caused by viruses. This is one of the main reasons it’s a must-have in your medicine chest. Read my post on cold and flu to learn more.
- Additionally, Tea Tree Oil also kills bacteria and viruses that lead to e Coli and pneumonia.
- When you get sick, your body produces more white blood cells to fight the infection. Melaluca oil helps to increase that white blood cell activity. A win-win.
- It’s also a natural disinfectant. When combined with Eucalyptus Oil, it makes an excellent all purpose cleaner to sanitize surfaces. Again, it’s good to have at this time of year when it seems everyone is sick.

Did you know…
- It is an antiseptic, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory.
- You can use it “neat” (directly on the skin). However, if you have sensitive skin, it’s best to dilute Tea Tree with a carrier oil like Sweet Almond or Jojoba.
- As mentioned earlier, it has been used for many years to help with congestion due to cold or flu. Options for use are: Add a few drops to a diffuser; rub a couple of drops on your hands and breath deeply; or add it to a few drops of carrier oil and rub on throat and chest.
- Melaluca has germ-fighting properties that make it a good, natural option for treating fungal and bacterial skin conditions.
- Likewise, it can also be used to treat nail and toenail fungus.
- Melaluca Oil is a very effective mosquito repellent and is definitely healthier than a chemically produced product.
- It has been used to treat dermatitis, psoriasis and acne.
- Use it as a natural alternative to deodorant.
- It has been used to disinfect minor cuts and abrasions and helps to encourage healing.
- Use it to wash veggies. Many believe by doing so it reduces mold growth and will help veggies stay fresh longer.
- Tea Tree Oil should not be ingested and never used on pets.
