The Important Things
Grocery shopping. Gift ideas. Chores to be completed. Life or Work Goals. Daily errands.
Whether we write it on a sticky note, cocktail napkin or in a fancy leather-bound organizer, we’ve all used a checklist at some point in our life. Depending on what we’re using it for, a well thought out, prioritized checklist will help us to stay on track. Also, it can help us stay on time or on budget.
“We like lists because we don’t want to die”
— Umberto Eco .
There are literally hundreds of online apps that will help you create a checklist on your phone, iPad or computer. In fact, there are so many available that it’s rather obvious that one size does not fit all!
Perhaps you like updating your list on the go from your mobile device. Or maybe you’re tech challenged and have trouble inputting your list. Maybe you’re like me and prefer something you can hold in your hands, scribble all over and check off as you complete a task?
“I like lists, I’m controlling, I like order. I’m difficult on every level.”
— Sandra Bullock.
]I’m not going to try and convince you that one checklist is better than another. Because it really comes down to personal preference. However, I do believe that keeping things simple also makes them more do-able.
Seriously, who needs color coded categories just to go grocery shopping!
Let me share a secret with you: The difference in the majority of checklists you’ll find online is that most of them lack the ability to prioritize. Prioritizing is your road map…if you don’t know where you’re going or how to get there, you’re just driving in circles.
“Lists are how I parse and manage the world.”
— Adam Savage.
First, making a prioritized checklist helps you focus on completing the task at hand. Second, it lessens the anxiety of possibly forgetting something in the process. Third, it can let you know, at a glance, if you’re on track or not.
Most importantly, lets not forget the sense of accomplishment. The one that comes from checking off everything on your list. It’s a great morale booster!
With a prioritized checklist, a person can conquer the world…or at least the shopping.

“I’m a big believer in to do lists. I think of five things in the shower. I set goals and get my work done.”
— Heidi Klum
